Vanessa Hatley-Owen


Back Vanessa Hatley-Owen grew up with her nose in a book, and now works in her dream job as a primary school librarian. She writes children's stories that have a touch of magic and adventure, and particularly enjoys the challenge of writing picture books. She has been shortlisted for both the Storylines Joy Cowley Picture Book Manuscript Award and the Storylines Tom Fitzgibbon Manuscript Award, and in 2018 she was awarded a New Zealand Society of Authors mentorship. Currently a member of the Storylines Management Committee, she also writes reviews for Kids Book NZ. Her first picture book, When Dad Came Home (Oratia, 2018) was written in honour of the returned servicemen of World War I. She lives in Howick, Auckland.
